Uploading your files via
FTP
FTP is short for File Transfer Protocol
and is the default method you'll use to
upload files to your account if you are
not using a development package such as
FrontPage, DreamWeaver or Visual Studio
which publishes your files for you.
In order to use FTP you will need some
software, called an FTP Client, which connects
to the server and allows you to log into
your account, copy, move, rename and delete
the files that make up your web site.
There are many FTP clients available and
your hosting account supports any standards
compliant FTP client. For the purposes of
this guide we will use Core FTP Lite which
an excellent and easy to use FTP client
and is free to use - download
it here.
Setting up Core FTP to upload
your files
When you load Core FTP for the first time
you'll shown the 'Site Manager' screen,
this is where you enter the details to allow
the FTP client to connect to your DotNetted
account.
There are many options on this page but
you only have to complete a few of the items
in order to connect to your account and
begin uploading files, you'll need to complete
:
| Site Name
: This is just a label to identify
your site, e.g. your domain name |
| Host Name : this will be ftp. and your domain
name e.g. ftp.mysite.co.uk |
| User Name : your account ftp username |
| Password : your account ftp password |
You have now provided all of the required
information so click on the 'Connect' button
at the bottom of the 'Site Manager' screen
and Core FTP will connect to your account.
Once connected you will now be presented
by a new screen with two panels, the left
hand panel shows the file system on your
local PC, the right hand panel shows the
files and folders on the server within your
account.
To upload files to your hosting account
simply locate them and select them in the
left hand panel then click on the upload
icon (blue arrow pointing right) to upload
them to your hosting account. To download
files from your account to your local machine
just select the files in the right hand
panel and click on the download icon (blue
arrow pointing left).
There are many more functions within Core
FTP that we can't cover here that will allow
you to move, delete and copy files and folders
as well as creating new folders within your
account, for details please refer to the
help files within the Core FTP program.
Note : Uploading whilst
awaiting domain propagation
When your hosting account is first created
it will take 24 - 48 hours before your new
or transferred domain name is live on the
account. During this time you can access
your FTP account using the temporary FTP
server name noted in your MyDotNetted
account.
